A 101 on Bathroom Plumbing Problems

|

Bathroom plumbing problems are inevitable. Sooner or later, you’ll find yourself facing a clogged toilet, a leaking shower or a sink that won’t drain at all. Don’t panic though because these issues are pretty easy to troubleshoot and fix. We recommend seeking the assistance of licensed and insured plumbers to fix such problems for you. But if you are into DIY plumbing and want to get tips, just read on and learn!

1. Clogged Sink Drain

Clogged sinks are not surprising at all. There are a lot of things that can get into the sink drain and eventually cause blockages such as hair strands, soap scum, shampoo scum and sometimes even small objects like jewelry. You can use baking soda and vinegar to wash away minor clogs and clean the drain. You can also hook out hair strands with the use of tools like Zip-It. If objects have fallen down the drain, you might need to detach the drain pipe and hook the objects out from there.

2. Clogged Toilets

Clogged toilets also happen once in a while. To solve this problem, you have to use a plunger that’s specifically made for toilets. If that won’t help, you can also use a plumbing snake to break the clog. If the toilet is too weak to flush the waste materials, you might want to check its jet holes. Make sure that they’re not clogged by sediments or debris, too.

3. Clogged Shower Heads / Low Flow

There are times when you’ll notice that no matter how high you turn the shower knob on, only a little water flows out of the fixture. If you leave in an area with hard water, mineral deposits may accumulate on fixtures, including your shower head. Just clean the shower head by soaking it in a mixture of vinegar and water. You can also brush it with an old toothbrush. If this won’t solve the problem, double check the supply valve and make sure that it is turned on.

4. Clogged Traps

Blockages usually occur in the traps. To remove the blockage, use a plumbing snake. Simply dismantle the drain pipe first with the use of a wrench. Once detached from the bathroom sink, insert the end of the plumbing snake into the trap. Turn the tool’s crank clockwise to destroy the clog. Wash the trap in a bucket of water to get rid of the remaining substances inside the pipe. Reconnect it and then turn on the tap. Check if the problem has been fixed and make sure that there are no leaks.

5. Leaking Toilets

There are many factors that may result to a leaking toilet. To be able to apply the right repair method, you should trace the source of the leak. Is it between the tank and the bowl? Is it at the bottom of the toilet? Once you’ve identified the source, check out this article on how to fix a leaking toilet. You’ll get a step-by-step guide on how to perform toilet repairs.
